MSFC-SPEC-521
Overview
This document was published to augment a number of test and EMC design requirement documents. Among these was SL-E-0002, which defined the EMC requirements for components flying on the space shuttle. MSFC-SPEC-521 expanded its scope to include not only the space shuttle, but also “spacelab, other carriers, or satellite system” (MSFC-SPEC-521B, page 1).
The latest version of this standard was the B-version, published in 1990.

This standard was itself, a tailoring of the EMC requirements for space environments. It contained provisions for the transmission and reception of S-band communications and data, an additional CS01 test to address the environment caused by “orbiter hydraulic circulation pumps” (page 9) as well as an electrostatic discharge (ESD) requirement. The general requirements of 521 are listed below.
CE01 |
Conducted emissions, power leads, 30 Hz to 20 kHz |
CE03 |
Conducted emissions, power leads, 20 kHz to 50 MHz |
TT01 |
Time domain transient and ripple test |
CE06* |
Conducted emissions, antenna terminals, 10 kHz to 15.5 GHz |
RE02 |
Radiated emissions, electric field @ 1 meter, 14 kHz to 10 GHz |
RE04 |
Radiated emissions, magnetic field @ 1 meter, 50 Hz to 50 kHz |
CS01 |
Conducted susceptibility, power leads, 30 Hz to 50 kHz |
CS02 |
Conducted susceptibility, power leads, 50 kHz to 400 MHz |
CS06 |
Conducted susceptibility, power leads, transient spike |
RS01 |
Radiated susceptibility, magnetic field, 30 Hz to50 kHz |
RS03 |
Radiated susceptibility, electric field, 14 kHz to 10 GHz |
*limited applicability - applies to antenna ports only.

EMC Integrity generates a detailed quotation for all formal compliance testing that we perform. Our quotations state the name of the product to be tested, the standards to which the product will be tested, the individual tests that will be performed and any additional testing that may be requested by the client. Tests are listed on a line-item basis, thus clearly delineating both the scope of work and the cost of each test. An outline of our process is given below.
